Trends of the 2019 AHR Innovation Awards

The AHR Expo Innovation Awards is an annual competition that honors the most inventive and original products, systems, and technologies showcased at each year’s AHR Expo. The Awards focus on fostering innovation and highlighting those that are leading the pack in the HVACR industry.

In this competition, products go head-to-head in the following categories: building automation; cooling; green building; heating; indoor air quality; plumbing; refrigeration; software; tools & instruments; and ventilation.

A panel of third-party ASHRAE member judges selected winners based on their products innovative design, creativity, application, value and market impact. When looking at the 2019 winners there are a few trends that  run parallel to those that are prevalent in society today.

Trends shown amongst the 2019 winners demonstrate concepts such as going green, increasing product efficiency, and making their products as consumer friendly as possible.

Going Green

In today’s society there is a sense of urgency to be as economically conscious as possible. Here enters the trend of “ Going Green”.  Energy Wall LLC demonstrates that by taking home the title in the Green Building category. Their innovation, the HVAC Load Reduction® (HLR) module 1000E-M, is an indoor air scrubber module designed to lower energy wastage from HVAC systems. It reduces the amount of outside air needed for ventilation by 60-80 percent. The innovative design is a first-of-its-kind solution that safely removes all molecular contaminants, including carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and a full range of volatile organic compounds from indoor air.

Product Efficiency

Technology is constantly evolving and improving to become as efficient as possible. With the HVACR industry being so prevalent in many day-to-day lives it is imperative that the industry and its products follow that standard. Many of the Innovation Awards winners have created products that are as profitable as possible, saving customers’ stress and providing them with the most swift and accurate measuring available.

Being Consumer Friendly

We can communicate, store and process information from just one touch on our phones or mobile devices. Some of the inventions involved in the awards allow their product to be controlled in this way. In the Tools & Instruments category of the Innovation Awards, Winner: Dwyer Instruments, Inc. created a product that is based on the use of wireless sensors, a versatile handheld device and Bluetooth® communication.  Their innovation, The Wireless Hydronic Balancing Kit, Series 490W, is a manometer designed to provide accurate and easy operation for HVAC professionals. The kit measures the pressure drop across HVAC balancing valves by using wireless technology, which makes it simple for its end users.

Will these trends in innovation continue to prosper as the 2020 AHR Expo approach us? Only time will tell. But it is sure the 2019 Innovation Award winners were on the right track with their upcoming inventions and how they highlight the societal trends in the HVAC world today.

The 2019 winners and their products will be honored during an awards ceremony held at the AHR Expo. In addition, the prestigious Product of the Year winner is announced. The ceremony is open to all attendees and will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 1pm.
